Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.
But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.
Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.
No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse
Woah , never read a more boring book ! . Oh , wait , I might have read one other very boring book . Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and this one are now competing on my list of worst books possible . Yes they both dangle nice things in your face…only you realise later that it’s never going to be given to you . You know , horses try to get the carrot dangling infront of them but they never get it ? Same !
Before She Ignites comes with the best thing a fantasy reader could want : Dragons ! I know you’re imagining this :
But we don’t get to see ⇑ . No , you can ditch your dragon dreams for this book . The dragons in this book are non-existent…oh , wait ,we have this dragon appearing now and then :
Cute , yeah , not what I wanted . But even the cute one is non-existent except in Mira’s brain . Honestly , stop pulling me with things you don’t serve !
Dropping my anger at the ploy of cheating readers out of dragons , let’s come to the protagonist Mira . Who decided she should be the protagonist ? Where are the protagonist vibes in her ?? What is she doing in there ??
Let me brief it to you : So , Mira is somehow special ( I’m still searching why ) and she’s in jail . That’s it . This is all that is in the book :
Mira : I’m the most important person in my kingdom . Mother tells me so
Mira : Oh , I have a pimple ! The jail is doing this to my skin . It hurts *whines*
Mira : Oh , mom must despise me . I had a pretty face and now it’s gone !
Mira : The boy in the next cell is cool . Should I speak to him ?
Seriously , what’s with all of that ?? I can take a little bit of self consciousness about looks but this is way over the top . NO NO NO .
Do you want to know why Mira is special ? Because a treaty is named after her ! Wow , super special , right ? But wait , nobody really treats Mira nice . She gets thrown into jail , her inmates are mean to her , the jailers aren’t nice people either . We only see her special-ness inside her own head .
Oh , we have 7 Islands in this but for some reason , we never see much about any of it . Wait , we never leave the jail for 80% of the book .
I hate this book . There’s a raging hatred inside my tiny heart , can you feel it ?
So , I don’t recommend this nor do I think I will ever consider rereading it . Nobody likes to burn themselves twice.
