The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
My Rating: ★★★★
Genre : Young Adult Fantasy
Theme : Time travel
Summary :
Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.
In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past
My Opinion
That was a high dose of so many things it’s taking me a long time to take everything in at once
I wish I had picked up this book earlier , like last year when I added it to my tbr and totally forgot about it . That’s the problem with picking books for covers : You pick them and forget them when they’re out of sight . The only reason I remembered that I have the book on the tbr , now, is because of the tweets about The Devil’s Thief .
The book was plain boring at the start . It took way too long for the story to pick up that I was almost contemplating DNFing the book but after a while , I forgot that I was convincing myself to DNF it . I think what kept me reading where the characters and not the story line itself ( no matter that it did get better towards the end )
I’ve always been a sucker for nice characters and a story well told . In this case , the characters were absolute lovelies . The best was Esta, the main character of the novel , who has the ability to manipulate time . She was cunning and sassy and you know what ? Awesome ! The plot was also incredible in that it had so many elements twisted together .
The plot also had a huge twist towards the ending and I guess I’m going to wait in line for the next book to finally come out . And it is going to come out rather soon ! Add this book to my darling Kingdom Of Ashes , I think 2018 is indeed sweet 🙂
