Despite their differences, sisters Vianne and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Vianne is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Vianne finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her.
As the war progresses, the sisters’ relationship and strength are tested. With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Vianne and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions.
On my mind
“If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: in love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.”
Omg but this book was nearly perfect !
I didn’t really think I was going to enjoy this book when I picked it , with all the references to love and war and for some reason , romances set in WWs never get me . But I chose to go at it because of all the glowing reviews and boy I’m happy I did .
This story brings out the other side of the war that is always shoved down . Men always think war is for them , those that fight , but of the women that are left behind ? The mothers , wivesand daughters who die every day waiting for their beloved to be home ? That’s what this book is about . It says everything that a war means for an woman .
The story focuses on two sisters Vianne (the elder ) and Isabelle . Vianne’s husband is in a Nazi war camp and so Vianne must take care of her younger sister who is living with them and also make sure that they don’t go starving .
To be honest , I found Isabelle the most refreshing character in this book . She’s courageous and rebellious and doesn’t bow to rules or accept the defeat of France. The best part about her is that we see her go from a girl to a woman . She started out as one of those impulsive girls who throw caution to the wind and then turned into someone wiser . That was awesome !
It was sad at times , getting to know how the Nazis used fear to control and take over people’s lives . We see how they manipulated people to betray their friends . We feel everything that goes on .
The only complaint I’ve got is that the story was a bit boring at times but that’s probably just me .
Just go get this !
