My thoughts …
Alright . So I’m an INDIAN and a HINDU . Should I say more about why I think this book is stupid in a 10000 ways ? Yeah ? Well I’m getting to it right now .
Kelsey is a white American , who’s in India for something about her job . And guess what ? Despite her being an American , she miraculously gets chosen to break a curse …a Hindu one . She’s got like no connections to India or Hinduism and SHE was chosen by DURGA DEVI , over a million Hindu Indians . Really ? Why the heck is that ?? Obviously , Durga loves A WHITE girl with no knowledge about India more than the people who worship her , right ?
The book isn’t even dealing with Indian myths . I had to look up the internet for many ‘Indian myths ‘ and found out that this book mixed up all Asian myths and called them Indian . I think the author needed to do some REAL research before writing .
It was like , the author didn’t want to deal with ‘Indian myths ‘ and only wanted an exotic setting and chose India for it . India is a nation with people , culture and history , but what’s India according to this book ? An exotic place with people who obviously need white people to save their brown skins . I’m not even kidding .
AH , I’m agitated . But let’s get to the other things now :
So Kelsey is an idiot who laughs in her interview and miraculously snags a job even though she’s under qualified . Her job is to spend two weeks in India and work at a circus . I can’t imagine that happening , can you ?
Kelsey is also the worst MC I’ve ever encountered . She pouts , throws tantrums about every little thing -you sure you want to read this thing ?
Here’s an example of how Ren is described :
- was “annoyingly happy”
- Smiled “mockingly” and “malevolently”
- grinned “maliciously”
So I’m supposed to fall in love with a guy described like that ?? And god he is right on there with Kelsey being immature . And that’s not even the worst . The worst is he is , apparently , HUNDREDS of years old . Rowan Whitethorn is exactly what a centuries old male should behave like , not like some immature pup who has a lot to learn .
Getting back to the racism part , well , I’m not even joking about that . I’d have seen racism even if I wasn’t an Indian . Colleen needs to know a lot of things about Indians , the first of all being – Indians don’t speak broken English . Most of the Indians speak English perfectly .
The book basically portrays Indians as simpletons who are horrible at English . Pretty much everyone who’s not white is portrayed like cartoons . I suppose it was supposed to be funny , but it’s just not . The book is about a white saviour , that’s it . Nothing more .
Read this book ? Tell me what you think !
